My Pedagogy

I believe that student led learning that is based around inquiry and skill development is the best form of learning that generates the most participation. Teaching an ADST course where the entry level skill of students coming into my classroom will greatly vary. When teaching topics such as block coding, writing script, 3D design, and general computer use (side note: I find it so fascinating that the grade I teach of 8 and 9 are very knowledgeable and efficient when using a cell phone but their typing speed is often slow and computer use is minimal). By incorporating a student led learning philosophy, I can teach students the basic skills of a given topic and provide additional tools for those who are already aware of these skills or are quick learners who need more of a challenge.

When thinking about inquiry based learning, it goes hand and hand with student led learning. A project I did when I was teaching English language arts 9 was for a lit circle unit with dystopian novels. The project was for each group to create a utopian society with a list of different topics they had to create (such as what would their schooling look like or what type of government would they have). I remember one group went above and beyond by creating a national anthem, a dance, and country dish.

With all that said, I think there needs to be a good amount of groundwork laid so students have the passion and skills to take their learning in their own hands and inquiry about topics that interest them. I have experience with student led learning in social studies, English, and computers classes but would love to hear some of your thoughts on it in other subjects.
