“Second chance for Tamil former child soldiers”

hi guys!

this article is from december 2009 but i thought it was really relevant to our discussion. it’s about former child soldiers of the LTTE and how the government is providing an education and vocational training for them to basically help them reintegrate into society and contribute. courses are taught in Tamil rather than Sinhala, so these children are getting an awesome opportunity at an education that they might not have had before. this sounded like a great idea to me, but there are a ton of criticisms that come along with it. the most prominent one was that this was just a propaganda move on the part of the sri lankan government;

“The government wants to showcase this to the international community and to the media. It wants to create an impression that other camps are run on the same lines. Sri Lanka’s government is keeping over 10,000 suspected LTTE members in various camps. International organisations are not given any access to these camps…”

here’s the link to the article if you want to read it! i thought it was really interesting.

Hey Shaheen,

Thanks for posting this article. I am pretty sure someone in our class did their news article review on this and I also found it really interesting.

I think it is important to be aware that the media often fails to provide accurate information and tends to miss a lot of significant points and truths that are to the story. Looking at this article, two main responses came from a teacher and the principal of the school. In my opinion, i think it is quite biased because i can’t see either of them looking at the education the former LTTE child soldiers are getting in an objective manner.

I think it is crucial to have a more thorough investigation of all the camps dispersed throughout the country in order to assess if the former child soldiers are getting an adequate and sufficient physical and psychological recovery and if their rights are being met. Here is another article (sorry it’s not from the most popular source) but it gives a totally different perspective to these camps. http://www.asianews.it/index.php?l=en&art=15855&size=A

Also, i wanted to see if there was any sort of attainment/ agreement to the UN envoy calling for families to gain custodies again and unfortunately the only article i could find was http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=33223&Cr=sri+lanka&Cr1= which still doesn’t say much at all.

(sorry if i wrote too much!)
