My name is Sean Sturm.
I am a 4th year arts major, at the tail end of completing my degree. I have focused thus far on History and Classical Studies, and by the end of this summer I will have fulfilled the requirements to graduate with a double-major in my chosen subjects.
I have always had an interest in the past, in particular the social and political undertones that have driven the major, and minor, events that have shaped the world that we live in today. Though it is hard to do in many cases, it is the documented communications of historical figures that capture my attention the most. This is where I tie in this course, in wholly modern business communications, into my field of interest. Although the times are drastically different from my field of study, the constant importance of communication, and in many cases miscommunication, that have shaped the course of history still ring true today. The ability to lead a group, to present an idea, or to introduce a solution all hinge on an individual’s ability to communicate with his peers, and in many cases the masses.
In my professional life I am currently in the process of moving up the corporate ladder, and am looking for a way to convert my academic learnings into a tangible tool that will allow me to succeed in my future career goals. Clear and concise communications, particularly in the telcom industry that I am currently employed in are key, and I am looking to utilize this course to enhance my skills in both communication and leadership. It is now time for me to transition from being an academic professional, to a successful professional in the realm of business and commerce.
