• Imagine that you did not know this person at all, and you had to evaluate their skills, knowledge and learning using only the content of their portfolio. What would you say the biggest strengths of this person are, and why (what evidence did you use to come up with the answer)?
Sebastian’s biggest strength is definitely his ability to appreciate the new possibilities that arises from new things that we’ve learned, which he then uses to craft well-thought out answers or hypotheses to questions that we tackle in class, or in the learning journals. In his learning journal 2, he talks about his newfound understanding of the effects of the maternal effect genes are in the developing embryo, and he then talks about his respect for the complexity of the regulation of genes in the system, and the importance of being able to build on this understanding as a way to begin tackling more intricate parts of this system, and how this system fits and interacts with other systems in the bigger picture.
• In reality, you do know this person (at least enough to ask to see their portfolio!). With this knowledge, suggest how your classmate could demonstrate her/his skills, knowledge, or learning even more effectively in their portfolio.
Sebastian definitely has an impressive library of background information about the things that we’ve learned in class, and it really shows in his portfolio. When discussing the concepts that we’ve learned, he conveys very good understanding of the materials, and so he ties together his background knowledge with his understanding to summarize and explain the things we’ve learned in class in a clear and succinct manner. This succinctness allows him to pack lots of important, technical information into a few short sentences, which is not a big problem if the reader is also knowledgeable in this field. Sometimes though, this kind of writing can be difficult to follow if there’s no transition that ties in concepts/information/conclusions that he previously mentioned to the ones that he will be making in the next sentences. Having these transitions definitely will make his journals more readable, and his arguments/assessments much easier to follow through.
• What are the biggest similarity and the biggest difference (if there are any) that you notice between your and your classmate’s portfolio?
I think the biggest similarity is the way we both tie in these concepts with what we’ve learned in class, which is awesome since it helps a lot in cementing our understanding of these stuff. The biggest difference would be his writing style; his straight to the point style allows for lots of information and conclusions to be communicated in fewer sentences, while mine ends up longer in an effort to make it more readable. Also in the future some graphics or figures would be a welcome break if there is a big wall of text to be read.

All in all it was awesome and very informative to read your blog, Sebastian!
