Opportunities

“…Education should help students to be aware of their own thinking, to be strategic and to direct their motivation toward valuable goals.  The goal is for student to learn to be their own teachers; in this sense, we speak of the need to move from teaching to self-reflective practice” (Schink & Zimmerman, 1998 in Montalvo, 2004)

As we continue to thrive in our new knowledge-based economy, self-guided learning capabilities will continue to be valued; therefore, there will continue to be a need for new media and technologies that foster, support and drive self-guided learning.

An area that represents tremendous opportunity for new technologies enabling SGL are formal learning settings. It will be interesting to see how these new technologies will evolve and blend themselves into the traditional education model.

More learning will be self-directed as these opportunities for informal learning become blended in and complement formal learning contexts where learners interact as content creators and collaborators. (Carter & Nugent, 2011)
