CFE Community Partner Contact Day

A) When is the Community Field Experience (CFE) Community Partner Contact Day?

The CFE Community Partner Contact Day is usually scheduled for the second or third Thursday of January.  However, to be sure, teacher candidates are required to login and refer to their program calendar for the specific date.

B) Is the CFE Community Partner Contact Day the same for all teacher candidates?  Yes the date of the CFE Community Partner Contact Day is the same  for all teacher candidates, regardless if they are doing an local, provincial, national or international CFE.

C) Is the teacher candidate’s faculty advisor the same for both the practicum and international CFE?

Usually, no.  The match between CFE FA and an internationally-bound teacher candidate is based on the faculty advisor choosing to advise in the same area of the world as the teacher candidate’s chooses to do their CFE. Having said this, each year there is one, possibly two, teacher candidates who choose an international CFE that matches their practicum faculty advisor’ international CFE advising preferences.

D) If a teacher candidate is scheduled to do an international CFE, is it mandatory that they participate in the CFE Community Partner Contact Day?

The CFE Community Partner Contact Day has been set a side so all teacher candidates can connect with/begin planning with their community partner and CFE faculty advisor (FA). However, many teacher candidates bound for an international CFE will have connected with their international CFE partners and CFE faculty advisors long before the  CFE Community Partner Contact Day, and for a variety of reasons (e.g., to obtain letters of invitation, firm up accommodations and expectations, obtain visas, etc.).  Thus it is not always mandatory that a teacher candidate participate in the CFE Community Partner Contact Day.

Teacher candidates bound for an international CFE must connect with their CFE faculty advisor to to determine if a meeting is scheduled for the CFE Community Partner Contact Day.

E) If a teacher candidate has already connected with their CFE faculty advisor and international CFE partner, and done this before the CFE Community Partner Contact Day, and verified with both their pattern and CFE faculty advisor that a meeting is not required (or scheduled) for this day, are there other activities that the Teacher Education Office recommends a teacher candidate (bound for an international CFE) engage in during the CFE Community Partner Contact Day?

Yes. The following are some recommended activities:

  • review international CFE guide
  • apply for required visas
  • send partner required documents
  • obtain vaccinations (at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure)
  • prepare instructional materials for international CFE
  • research/plan travel routes to/from Vancouver to international CFE
  • purchase gifts for international partner
  • research and arrange for phone/laptop connectivity (e.g., purchase roaming plan from mobile provider )
  • ensure medical and travel insurance is in place
  • update UBC Safety Abroad information
  • research best way to exchange currency and best ways to carry funds safely
  • purchase drugs required for your three week visit
  • purchase clothes, bug netting, shoes, etc.

If all the above are completed, teacher candidates are advised to use the time to work on BEd coursework.
