My name is Shadow, and I am a 4th year student majoring in Global Resource Systems in the Faculty of Land and Food systems. My degree focuses a lot on systemic change, sustainability, decolonization, indigenous sovereignty and economic justice.
I am originally from Guangzhou, China and currently live, learn, and breathe on the unceded, ancestral, and occupied, traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Watuth), Stó:lō, Shíshálh (Sechelt) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations of the Coast Salish peoples, which is known as the Vancouver area.
I am personally interested in the application of quantum physics and systemic issues, specifically the interconnectedness of scientific laws/theories and social phenomenons. I am specifically interested in the environmental, social, cultural and spiritual impacts of capitalism, and the possibilities of an economic revolution.
I am interested in this course because of my skepticism in capitalism and its underlying narratives of western-centrism, settler colonialism and anthropocentrism, and I would like to learn about other ways of knowings and to live in harmony with other humans, non-humans and more-than human beings.
Outside of classrooms, my life is filled with the questions of life, death, purpose, and spirituality. This sensory reality cannot be all that there is, and I explore the boundaries of realities and consciousness.
I am thrilled to be taking this class with you!

Shadow, your multilingual poem is beautiful and the visual poetry of the images that follow it is equally striking. What a lovely way to make your acquaintance. Welcome to LAST303! I look forward to hearing your input as our Land and Food Systems expert!

Hi Shadow! I was about to write something along the lines of what Tamara wrote – your poem was beautiful and I liked the creative liberty you took with it. I wish I had thought of writing my blog post partly in French! I have met a few people in this class who are in GRS, it’ll be interesting to me to see points of view coming from everyone in LFS, as I don’t usually have classes with people in your faculty! I liked the pictures you added on too, Alaska looks incredible and it is definitely climbing my to-see list. How did you travel there/how did you find it? Also I had never seen a cashew fruit before, is there only one nut inside or many of them?? It looks like a cacao pod.
Excited to get to know you more!

Hi Geneviève, thank you for your kind words!
I did a backpacking course with NOLS Alaska, and we basically hiked and lived in the backcountry for 28 days. We came across the glacier because it was on the way to our expected destination haha.
I have never seen a cashew fruit either before that. It has lots of fruits inside them, actually look kinda like an ice cream. The cashew nut is inside the meat of the fruit I guess? I am not sure actually haha.
Excited to get to know you too:)

Hi Shadow!
I really enjoyed your poem – the photos that you added are so beautiful! You’re interests in environmental, social, cultural and spiritual impacts of capitalism, sound so interesting – I love learning about these sorts of things as well. I’m definitely still in the beginnings of learning about these sorts of topics, but its definitely interesting to think of the possibilities of the interconnectedness of such topics, in relation to a economic revolution at some point. I think questioning life, death, purpose, and spirituality is always fascinating, and I love to hear other peoples thoughts on the matter – so it’s really cool to see you so interested on these topics!
Excited to be able to get to know you more! 😀
