Student lead code of conduct
At the beginning of the year I led the students through creating our class code of conduct. We brainstormed how best practices in learning and building friendships and then we put these ideas into a code of conduct for our class. As the year progressed we would return to this code of conduct to reflect on our classroom community.
2D Geometry Unit
This unit focused on attributes of 2D shapes. Students learned 13 shapes, their # of sides, # angles and # of vertices, as well as one line of symmetry. Students learned these attributes and then moved on to comparing shapes and problem solving with shapes. This unit was cross curricular in order to engage students. Examples include, shape games, songs, finding shapes outside, and making shapes with their bodies.
Social Responsibility
In this unit students discovered the consequences of landfills and came up with some solutions. We did an inquiry into whether we could send garbage to the moon. This inquiry led to the discovery that there is even a garbage problem in space from rocket ships and broken down satellites. To solve the garbage problem here on Earth, students implemented an organics and recycling bin into the classroom. This organics bin led to the creation of a worm compost and questions about worms.
Morning Meeting
In our classroom each morning students sat in a circle and expressed how they felt by giving a number between 1 and 10. There was a lack of honesty and authenticity when it came to their responses. In order to encourage students to share their feelings, we made drums out of two cardboard bowls and drummed our feelings.
