Music can be very influential in teaching students Shakespeare literature. Using music in classroom settings aid students in their learning, as it allows them to use pop culture and make it relevant in the classroom. Music can be helpful to students by giving them the opportunity to analyze significant passages through the creation of playlists (pre-made, or originally created). This will create a connection between scenes and themes in the play to pop culture that students will be eager to engage in.
For example, the students create a list of songs that Romeo would share with Juliet to express his love for her. Students would have to create their own songs or come up with a list of pre-made songs that relate to the character’s of Romeo and Juliet.
Using music to teach Shakespeare literature gives students the chance to participate in active learning and take responsibility for making their own meanings to the text. By giving them the power to choose their own songs, they will be making personal connections with the play at hand and will have the ability to analyze characters and themes that makes sense to each student individually.
