This chapter starts with the reflection that further research is needed on the correlation between quilting, but what formal studies there have been agree that there is a positive and beneficial connection between art and health (in general) and quilting and health (in particular).

This chapter outlined how there were many studies focused on how art can have a positive effect on measurable health indicators, such as a reduction stress levels, anxiety and depression. Creative expression gives the opportunity for self-affirmation by giving the opportunity to be heard, vent anger and work through the grieving process. The studies also showed physiological effects such as the lessening of pain and the attendant need for medication, and reduced hospital stays.

As well, the chapter cited studies where quilting had been shown to be helpful with people suffering from such diseases and Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Migraines and M.S. by improving their pain levels, manual dexterity and overall mental health.

The chapter summaries studies conducted around the Aids Memorial Quilt, which gave people a place to process their grief after losing a loved one to the AIDS Epidemic. Not only were the grieving supported by this process, but the quilt project was also shown to be a tool in the endeavor to educate the public about acceptance of people living with aids. As well, the was shown that there was a reduction in risky behaviors that could contribute to the spread of AIDS.

The authors also point out that quilting has been a source of social connection, creative outlet and political activism for centuries.

They authors also point out that receiving a quilt from someone is also like receiving a big old warm hug. And who couldn’t use one of those.
