Botany Composting Committee

The Composting Committee (chaired by Kathy Nomme) set up the Botany Composting Program. The teaching labs and members of the department contribute their vegetative scraps. The compost generated is applied to the teaching gardens at Totem Field and South Campus.

Living Collections Committee – Chair
The living collections include two main facilities: the Canadian Center for the Culture of  Microorganisms as well as the Botany Department Greenhouse and Teaching Gardens. Most of my duties as chair of this committee have been to do with the development of teaching materials through the latter.

Greenhouse Committee – Member

The Botany Department has a new greenhouse on the top of the BioSciences Building. It is not only important for growing course material, but has potetnial for research space as well. A new committee has been formed to evaluate the current and potential uses of the greenhouse space. I am currently researching different approaches to biological pest control by interviewing greenhouse managers on-campus and in the Greater Vancouver area.

Teaching Garden Organization

I organize the gardens for plants for Biology courses: 210, 209, 324, and 343 (summer and winter sessions). We have four teaching gardens. The Food and Perennial Gardens are at Totem Field, whereas the Medicinal and “Weed” Gardens are at UBCFarm (South Campus).

Liaison with Public

Members of the public contact the Botany Office for advice on plants. The calls are referred to me and I will either answer the question(s) or direct them to the faculty member who will be able to help them.

Liaison with UBC Plant Operation Head Gardener

The courtyard was renovated and replanted last year. I have collaborated with the Head Gardener about plant selection useful to biology courses.
