Statement of Teaching Philosophy
Reflect on your own: Think back on your Teaching Perspective Inventory results and reflect on your own teaching. Based on the description of your perspective(s) and your own reflection on how you teach, what is your dominant perspective “about” or what does it mean to you. What are some of the things that stood out to you about your own perspective? Were there any surprises? Is there something that you plan to change or think about as a result of what you saw in your TPI results? (You may record these reflections on your own blogs)
Reflection:
I scored highly for both the apprenticeship and nurturing domains. I think the apprenticeship domain is about teaching by showing and doing. This is particularly important in teaching clinical skills to students as only modelling and real life practice will ensure that the information becomes embedded in the student. I think the nurturing domain is about supporting and guiding students so that they become confident in their own abilities and develop a sense of self that will guide them to take control of their own learning needs. I thought That I would have scored a bit higher in the transmission domain as many of my own questions about my teaching centers around the effectiveness of my teaching. That is something I plan to work on and evaluate in the future. Based on the TPI results I would like to increase the level of social reform in my teaching, however implementing changes to this domain would be after I become more comfortable with the effectiveness and quality of my teaching.
