Course Description

As an online course, the intention of ENG301 is to cultivate students’ writing skills and online communications skills. To foster these skills, this course expects students to write and communicate in a concise and easily understandable way within a business, professional, and technical context.

Unlike most writing courses which mainly focus on the study of the English language, ENG301 requires students to engage with their classmates in online discussions, peer reviews, and writing practices produced for abstracts, proposals, and reports.(Paterson, Course Description) Also, independent writing practices, such as applications, resumes, and Web folio expect students to work independently and consult the instructor actively.

The course breaks down into four units:

  • Unit One: Students get to know the instructor and classmates online and get familiar with the course structure and expectations. At the same time, this unit focus on small writing practices addressing particular types of business correspondence;
  • Unit Two: Students get started with the formal report and make sure to keep the audience in mind when writing;
  • Unit Three: Peer review on draft formal report and start design and write a full job application package;
  • Unit Four: The final revision of the formal report and complete the job application package.
