Question: How can educators foster a classroom climate that encourages a development of students’ sense of responsibility?

Abstract:

My project investigated how educators can create a classroom environment where students are more responsible for their own learning. This can be accomplished through both student-centered management and instruction.  Classrooms that support constructivist learning and a sense of community contribute to heightened overall student success.

This question arose out of a want to learn about effective classroom management strategies that can be implemented. A focus for getting students to manage and monitor themselves was used as an interest in increasing student’s sense of independence was addressed.

Findings show that if teachers are wanting students to be more engaged, interested and motivated in their school work, they need to become more responsible for the work overall. Expectations need to be clear and students need to be given a voice and choice in their work. Teachers, especially those who have been in the system for many years, tend to be very reluctant to give this much power over to students. However, if done through a gradual release of responsibility, students’ happiness and performance in school will be high.
