My group project focused on crime events in Chicago, IL, specifically investigating assault, battery, and criminal sexual assault. In the first part of the project, we used various methods to determine hot spots of crime, both for raw numbers and events normalized by population. We also analyzed the influences of assault and battery on criminal sexual assault. Next, we investigated correlation between crime and socioeconomic variables. This portion of the analysis was based on the City of Chicago’s Hardship Index. Finally, we looked at a subset of the data, events for which arrests were made. We compared hot spots of arrests to the hot spots of crime occurrence. We found that hot spots of crime occur in western and southern Chicago, assault and battery have an influence on criminal sexual assault, socioeconomic factors have a strong relationship to crime, and arrest hotspots coincide with crime hot spots.
