ENGL 301 will build on students’ English writing abilities and help them develop the skills needed to communicate effectively in professional environments. This course is delivered virtually and immerses students by solely focusing on written communication and assignments. They will learn to create abstracts, reports, proposals, and email correspondence. These exercises will prepare students to work in various business and professional environments.

Students will complete readings and activities that will teach them the main aspects of business, technical and professional writing. They will put this knowledge into practice with short, frequent assignments. These small assignments will encourage regular reflection on key concepts and prepare students for the other coursework. The longer assignments, such as the formal report, will be more comprehensive. They will allow students to use all of the skills they learned during the course. In addition, students will create an online portfolio that will teach them about applying to professional job postings and networking. Throughout this course, the students will be encouraged to reflect on their writing and editing skills using peer reviews, constructive criticism from the professor and self-reflection.

While enrolled in ENGL 301, I hope to build on my existing technical writing skills to become a more effective and convincing writer. I expect that the short, frequent assignments will allow me to improve quickly by incorporating the feedback given into my future work. The online portfolio will help me compete for professional positions by improving my applications and confidence. Additionally, writing a formal report throughout the term to improve my written technical communication. I believe that this immersive course is an excellent opportunity to become a better writer in business, professional, and technical contexts.
