I&#8217;m a Ph.D. candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/linguistics.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia<\/a>. I specialize in semantic fieldwork, and language documentation of understudied Indigenous languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">My dissertation examines and semantically models the structure of change-of-state meanings in two Interior Salish languages, Secwepemctsi\u0301n and n\u0142e\u0294kepmxci\u0301n. I specifically look at how verb roots interact with (in)transitivizing morphology related to agent control, as well as how these patterns relate to stativity and inchoativity. My dissertation work involves field research, for which I work collaboratively with Indigenous community members.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Beyond my dissertation, I\u2019ve worked on a range of topics, including <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.linguisticsociety.org\/proceedings\/index.php\/PLSA\/article\/view\/5683\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the pragmatic use of question and reason words in Dutch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/snederve\/files\/2023\/02\/A%CC%84-driven-anti-agreement-in-Dutch-inflectional-morphology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cla-acl.ca\/pdfs\/actes-2021\/Nederveen-Double_perfect_in_Swiss_German.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">morphosyntactic patterns<\/a> in Germanic, and <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/jos\/ffaf010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agentivity in Salish languages<\/a>. I run semi-competitively and volunteer with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fernwoodsocialrunclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">run club<\/a>, where I organize events and connect with folks in my community. I also volunteer with the Victoria Humane Society&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwasasleddog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sled dog rescue program<\/a>, and share my home (and many trail adventures) with my wife and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwasasleddog.com\/blog\/clyde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my retired sled dog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 12px;\">edited: September 2025<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nWelcome to my personal website.
