Japanese census data aggregated to 1 km grid squares and 1 km mesh boundary files were obtained through e-Stat, Japan’s statistics data portal site. Census data was collected for 2015, the most recent census data published. Data was collected for areas that exceeded the Tokyo Metropolitan Region, which contains the prefectures of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. Surplus data was collected so that hotspot analysis could provide us with some context for the areas lying outside of the Tokyo Metro Region.
Boundary files for the country, prefectures, and city areas were obtained from GADM, the Database of Global Administration Areas.
Urban train system and hospital shapefiles were secured through Open Street Map. Hospitals were queried to create a feature class. Although having metro stations as point data would have been preferable, we were unable to locate shapefiles with station data hence proximity analysis was based on access to subway lines rather than stations.
Landslide, debris flow, and steep slope hazard data was found from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism’s Land GIS data repository, National Land Numerical Information. A Digital Elevation Model for the country was located on the Harvard Dataverse.
