Inquiry question

My Inquiry:

How can we foster different learning strategies that enhances motivation and self-esteem in students through physical literacy?

A little more in depth…

This question arises to me when during my experiences in a physical education environment students demonstrated a lack of motivation in participating in physical exercise. In addition, our current society demonstrates a mentality that allows physical education to be measure by mastering a task instead of measuring growth and developing.

The article The Educational Importance of Self-Esteem by Ferkany, (2008). Proposes the inquiry question; “should school teachers and administrators worry themselves much about the esteem children have for themselves as persons, i.e. their global self-esteem (henceforth, just ‘self-esteem’)?” (Ferkany, 2008, p.1). The argument on this question states how teachers would have a conflict between concentrating on important education objectives such as, academic achievement or character education and motivation through self-esteem. Ferkany, (2008) research study answers this question by explaining how self-esteem increases student’s confidence and motivation. Ferkany, (2008) also states how through motivation and self-esteem students will engaged a lot more in the classroom and achieve their educational goals.

In my personal experience meeting the expectation of my physical and health education instructor meant that I will fulfill the requirements of running a mile in sub-6. Most of my classmates did not fulfill this requirement and personally neither did I. This meant that my overall PE grade was a B+, resulting in that my growth and development as student or athlete did not counted at all towards my physical literacy benchmark. Overall, this was something that Ferkany, (2008) was referring to and it was the aspect of concentrating on the education objectives rather than leadership or character through my personal growth and develop.

In Correlation with my life experiences and the journal article by Ferkany, (2008), physical education is a subject that impacts motivation and self-esteem in different areas of a student. That is why my inquiry question situates with my curiosity in finding different strategies in fostering motivation and obtaining self-esteem. To summarize I hope to find different strategies of learning through physical literacy and enhanced a flexible and engagement environment. Most significantly my strategies will be based on the core competencies and the big ideas of BC curriculum.
