Hii! I’m Sophia, and I’m a third-year student majoring in art history with a minor in visual art. I’ve always believed that fine arts and literature are very similar, because both are ways for people to express their emotions, experiences, and thoughts to the world. In that sense, writers are also artists. They just use words instead of paint, clay, or digital tools. This semester I’m taking a modern European art history class, so I think it would be really interesting to explore some modern European literature at the same time. It feels like another way of interpreting art, just in a different form, and I enjoy seeing how similar ideas can appear across different creative fields. Because of this interest, I’m also very curious about Romance Studies. To me, studying Romance Studies means understanding how language, history, and culture shape the way people express themselves through literature, just like artists express themselves through visual forms.
In my spare time, I really enjoy listening to audiobooks. Most of the ones I choose are about contemporary social issues in Asia and are written by modern authors. Recently, I tried listening to an audiobook of a novel that I had already read before, because I loved it so much. I was surprised to find that listening to it felt very different from reading it. The narrator’s voice, tone, and rhythm added new emotions and meanings to the story, almost like I was experiencing a completely new book.
Besides reading and listening to books, I also make art in my free time. Oil painting is the medium I am most familiar with, but I also enjoy working with acrylic paint, paper clay, printmaking, 3D modeling, and digital illustration. I love experimenting and trying new materials, because creating art is the biggest passion in my life. Right now, I am still in the process of developing my own personal style. My goal is to discover and strengthen that style this year, since I am preparing my portfolio for graduate school. Having a clear and recognizable artistic voice is very important to me, and I hope that through constant practice and exploration, I can finally find the style that truly represents who I am as an artist.
