In 2013 Shell expanded its oilsands amid environmental concerns. Because of the project Canada lost thousands of hectares of wetland, which harmed not only vegetation but also can an impact on migratory birds, caribou and other wildlife.

I think this article relates to COMM 101 Sustainability class and creating shared value. From this article it is evident that Shall creates a Shared Value by tiring to reduce carbon dioxide emission. The plan is to construct Quest — a dizzying labyrinth of tubes and pipes — that will be attached to the Shell’s upgrader. The aim of the project is to capture a million tones of carbon dioxide annually that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere — about a third of the upgrader’s total emissions. Of course Shell can easily provide alternative energy by using solar panels and windmill, however oilsands remain too competitive to quit. Though projects like Quest have their societal benefits, they aren’t necessarily commercially viable without some sort of outside incentive.
