Description: ¡BIENVENIDOS!

Spanish 101 –summer- is an experiential course where you will be immersed in

the Spanish language and culture. It is designed to acquire practical communication

through every day life topics, such as university life, family, food, traditions, and more.

The fundamentals of grammar will be studied so you can apply them in the

four skills of learning: speaking, listening, writing and reading.

Classes will be conducted in Spanish as much as possible and English will be used for

clarification and effectiveness of teaching.

The intention of this teaching style is to create a safe environment for you to

explore the language and participate as much as possible, since it is one of the fewest

opportunities you will have to practice Spanish in Vancouver.

What you will gain with this course:

*Knowledge in basic grammar to be able to build simple yet skilled sentence

structures.

*Effective communication through listening, speaking, writing and reading.

*Acquisition of vocabulary through role-play situations given in class.

*Creativity in solving different scenarios where you could be immersed when

exposed to the culture.

Pre-requisites:

Spanish 101 is a 3-credit course for fully beginners, with little or no

knowledge in the language. If you have taken Grade 11 Spanish or equivalent,

you are welcome to take the course. Students with Grade 12 Spanish are

normally placed in the 2nd year of Spanish, although some exceptions may be

applied. Should you be unsure of your level, the coordinator of this course will

provide a placement test.

Expectations:

*It is expected that you commit to the course by attending faithfully to classes,

have a positive attitude towards learning, by completing the homework

assigned and practicing as much as possible inside and outside class.

*Clarify with the instructor any questions or concerns you might have. Don’t

leave it to the last minute! The clearer each topic is in your mind, the faster you

will progress and the more you will enjoy learning Spanish.

*Cellular phones must be Turned OFF during the class. It is important that you

are present and engaged with the class, avoiding any external distraction that

could prevail you from learning.
