Description: <\/strong>\u00a1BIENVENIDOS!<\/p>\n

Spanish 101 \u2013summer- is an experiential course where you will be immersed in<\/p>\n

the Spanish language and culture. It is designed to acquire practical communication<\/p>\n

through every day life topics, such as university life, family, food, traditions, and more.<\/p>\n

The fundamentals of grammar will be studied so you can apply them in the<\/p>\n

four skills of learning: speaking, listening, writing and reading.<\/p>\n

Classes will be conducted in Spanish as much as possible and English will be used for<\/p>\n

clarification and effectiveness of teaching.<\/p>\n

The intention of this teaching style is to create a safe environment for you to<\/p>\n

explore the language and participate as much as possible, since it is one of the fewest<\/p>\n

opportunities you will have to practice Spanish in Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What you will gain with this course:<\/strong><\/p>\n

*Knowledge in basic grammar to be able to build simple yet skilled sentence<\/p>\n

structures.<\/p>\n

*Effective communication through listening, speaking, writing and reading.<\/p>\n

*Acquisition of vocabulary through role-play situations given in class.<\/p>\n

*Creativity in solving different scenarios where you could be immersed when<\/p>\n

exposed to the culture.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pre-requisites:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spanish 101 is a 3-credit course for fully beginners, with little or no<\/p>\n

knowledge in the language. If you have taken Grade 11 Spanish or equivalent,<\/p>\n

you are welcome to take the course. Students with Grade 12 Spanish are<\/p>\n

normally placed in the 2nd year of Spanish, although some exceptions may be<\/p>\n

applied. Should you be unsure of your level, the coordinator of this course will<\/p>\n

provide a placement test.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Expectations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

*It is expected that you commit to the course by attending faithfully to classes,<\/p>\n

have a positive attitude towards learning, by completing the homework<\/p>\n

assigned and practicing as much as possible inside and outside class.<\/p>\n

*Clarify with the instructor any questions or concerns you might have. Don\u2019t<\/p>\n

leave it to the last minute! The clearer each topic is in your mind, the faster you<\/p>\n

will progress and the more you will enjoy learning Spanish.<\/p>\n

*Cellular phones must be Turned OFF during the class. It is important that you<\/p>\n

are present and engaged with the class, avoiding any external distraction that<\/p>\n

could prevail you from learning.<\/p>\n

Ejercicio auditivo <\/strong>(10%): In this test, your instructor will dictate single words from the<\/p>\n

vocabulary assigned for the test, paragraphs and full sentence questions, which will be<\/p>\n

answered by using the pertinent vocabulary and grammar.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Examen 1 <\/strong>(15%), Examen 2 <\/strong>(15%) y Examen Final <\/strong>(20%): These exams are divided in 4 sections (filling the blanks, personalized questions, a composition based on situations practiced in class and a text specific translation). All the sections will test the<\/p>\n

vocabulary of the chapters assigned, as well as the grammar taught in class.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Composici\u00f3n 1 y 2 <\/strong>(10% each): you will be assigned a composition of about 150 words<\/p>\n

specific to the chapters covered in class. The compositions will be done in class only.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tareas del Blog y Ilearn<\/strong>(5%): the on-line component is assigned weekly <\/strong>and according to the lessons<\/p>\n

covered in class. Most of the activities are computer graded. This activity will be graded<\/p>\n

by completion. I have set up a blog for the course to post lecture notes, a copy of the syllabus and homework assignments.\u00a0 Each week there will be 3 assignments posted, one from the Ilearn Online Workbook, one from the Ilearn Online Listening Lab and a free-writing practice question you will answer in the comment section of the course blog.\u00a0The address is<\/p>\n
