{"id":516,"date":"2013-02-17T08:47:31","date_gmt":"2013-02-17T15:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/?page_id=516"},"modified":"2013-03-05T23:08:11","modified_gmt":"2013-03-06T06:08:11","slug":"camosun-bog","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/camosun-bog\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun Bog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosunbogbanner1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"camosunbogbanner\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosunbogbanner1.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For more than five years we have been collaborating with the Camosun Bog Restoration Group to survey the bog.\u00a0 We consult on bryophytes as well as invasives.\u00a0 Students visit the bog twice and survey plots using vegetation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/CamData2.pdf\">Data Collection Sheets<\/a>.\u00a0 Samples are collected and taken back to the lab for identification. \u00a0the development of an online Sphagnum Key has been developed in conjunction with this project (online release: May 2012)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosun21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"camosun2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosun21-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Camosun Bog is a small peatland sitting on the edge of Pacific Spirit Park (formerly Endowment Lands of the University of British Columbia).\u00a0 The formation of this wetland took thousands of years, achieving \u201cbogdom\u201d approximately 2,000 years ago \u2013 only a remnant remains; in less than a century, logging, fires, and more seriously, urban development changed the landscape.\u00a0 Altered hydrology had a detrimental impact on the unique bog plants, in fact very little\u00a0<em>Sphagnum<\/em>\u00a0persisted by 1985.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosun31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"camosun3\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/biology321\/files\/2012\/03\/camosun31-300x207.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>Almost as soon as Pacific Spirit Park was established in 1990 the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Vancouver Natural History Society took action and had 150 hemlock trees removed using helicopters.\u00a0 This of course did not solve the problem and indeed created new ones, but with the trees out of the way work could begin.\u00a0 In 1995 the Camosun Bog Restoration Group was established.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/camosun-bog\/attachment\/0359\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-823\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-823\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/files\/2013\/02\/0359-265x300.jpg\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/files\/2013\/02\/0359-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/files\/2013\/02\/0359-132x150.jpg 132w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sphagnum\/files\/2013\/02\/0359.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This dedicated group of volunteers, have worked tirelessly removing debris and re-establishing the wetland.\u00a0 A combination of substrate removal to bare peat (lowering the water table) and various experiments on\u00a0<em>Sphagnum<\/em>\u00a0and peatland rehabilitation are successfully bringing this bog back to life.\u00a0 Today you can see it as a work in progress.\u00a0 A boardwalk was constructed around the perimeter offering views from all angles.\u00a0 You can see areas of well-established\u00a0<em>Sphagnum<\/em>, recent transplants, sites being prepped for planting, as well as areas where invasives, such as\u00a0<em>Juncus<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Dulichium<\/em>, are in the process of being removed.\u00a0\u00a0 Bog plants you can find include: numerous species of\u00a0<em>Sphagnum<\/em>, cranberry (<em>Vaccinium oxycoccus<\/em>), Labrador tea (<em>Rhododendron groenlandicum<\/em>), sundew (<em>Drosera rotundifolia<\/em>), bog laurel (<em>Kalmia microphylla<\/em>), blueberry (<em>Vaccinium myrtilloides, V. ovalifolium, V. uliginosum<\/em>), shore pine (<em>Pinus contorta<\/em>), and cloudberry (<em>Rubus chamaemorus<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>For more Information:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Camosun Bog Restoration Group\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.camosunbog.org\/index.htm\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hermansen, S. and G.
