I took this picture on my first day at my school, and i didn’t really know how it fit into the IB PYP until this week in class at UBC. After learning about the Key concepts in class I am now reflecting on how it was used in my grade 2 classroom during the past weeks, including my two week practicum. I now realized that my SA had this up on the wall by the corner of the class where they usually sit and have class discussions. It was used as a reminder for the students to use when asking questions. When I look back at the classroom organization and layout of the classroom, IB content is prominently displayed.
I like how they are visually using the keys in your classroom, much like what we saw today in our IB seminar. The extra permanent visuals should really help drive home the different key concepts, especially as you’ve noted how they are placed in the area of the classroom where they usually sit and have discussions. As we’ve mentioned with class design, we don’t want them ending up being wall paper. I’m actually struggling to think I’ve seen the key concepts displayed in my classroom, something I’ll need to follow up with my SA on.
That’s great that this mystery was solved for you! I love the keys, can’t wait until I have a classroom of my own one day to make a set!
Do you ever see the kids come off the wall? Maybe when they’re asking questions, especially when in that part of the class, they could take down the one that fits with the kind of question they’re asking? See how many they could take off the wall in one lesson, and try to beat their record? Very cool!!
Steen, good for you for noticing these in your classroom after we talked about them in the IB seminar. I would love to know how your SA is using them in the units of inquiry and other areas of the curriculum. Maybe try in your term 2 practicum to try exploring with these in your mini lessons that you do! Let me know how it transpires.
