Reflections as a learner, educator, and a curious researcher

Musings

Welcome to this  eclectic collections and random thoughts– all related to teaching and learning, somewhat.

  • Why am I interested in SoTL program at UBC?

To begin with here is a very entertaining and thought provoking talk by Sir Ken Robinson that motivated me to apply for the  SoTL at UBC.  Even though the talk per se might seem centred around child education, many of the underlying thought currents flow into adult education. Particularly, the emphasis on  nurturing resonates with me. Many successful engineering industries incorporate this element of nurturing in training their young and freshly minted engineers.

Then I began to do some background reading on teaching practises. After some you tubing I found these two videos below which got me interested in SoTL.

Actually, there is more to it. I am engaged in the practise of teaching. I teach both graduate and undergraduate courses. I currently teach a fourth year undergraduate core course on Mechanical Vibrations at UBC. Over the past three years or so I experimented with various practises to varying degrees of success.  All these  are motivated and shaped by the students I engage with. I thought I can pause and reflect on my teaching practise and assess my experiences in the context of educational theories ‘out there’. SoTL popped up at the right time. So here I am.
