{"id":1705,"date":"2017-03-03T12:57:51","date_gmt":"2017-03-03T19:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/?p=1705"},"modified":"2017-03-03T12:57:51","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T19:57:51","slug":"t-gem-building-circuits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/2017\/03\/03\/t-gem-building-circuits\/","title":{"rendered":"T-GEM: Building Circuits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I taught Grade 7 Science and one of the more difficult outcomes to teach was Electricity.\u00a0 Many of the students know that electricity is there but since they cannot \u201csee\u201d it the struggled with the concepts.<\/p>\n<p>These were the outcomes for the electricity unit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Construct and draw a simple series circuit and a simple parallel circuit (P1)<\/li>\n<li>Compare the characteristics of series and parallel circuits (P2)<\/li>\n<li>Describe simple applications for series and parallel circuits (P3)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following is a 3-step T-GEM cycle for Electricity :<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Teacher <\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Students<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Generate:<\/p>\n<p>Teacher asks students to create a mind map around the word electricity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teacher listens while taking note of the misconceptions that they may possess.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">In small groups students will generate a mind map, letting their ideas and words flow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students present their mind maps and hang them on the wall.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Evaluate:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teacher gives students a battery, wires, switch, and a light bulb. Ask students to form a complete circuit and try to light the bulb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teacher walks around observing how students are constructing the circuits<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Students working together they try and conduct a circuit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Modify:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teachers helps any groups that needs it and explains the difference between a series and a parallel circuit.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students look at where they went wrong and modify accordingly.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I used the phet website (<a href=\"https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/en\/simulation\/legacy\/circuit-construction-kit-dc\">https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/en\/simulation\/legacy\/circuit-construction-kit-dc<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This was an excellent resource to use during this unit because the resources at our school are few and far between and this really helped the students understand the concept of building circuits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I taught Grade 7 Science and one of the more difficult outcomes to teach was Electricity.\u00a0 Many of the students know that electricity is there but since they cannot \u201csee\u201d it the struggled with the concepts.
