{"id":2895,"date":"2017-06-27T21:47:35","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T04:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/?p=2895"},"modified":"2017-06-27T21:49:08","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T04:49:08","slug":"digital-meets-analogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/2017\/06\/27\/digital-meets-analogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital meets Analogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I found this week&#8217;s readings quite beneficial as I am currently trying to \u00a0create online lessons that strike the delicate balance between autonomous discovery and structured guidance in the zone of proximal development. As <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Linn, Clark &amp; Slotta (2003) state<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cif steps are too precise, resembling a recipe, then students will fail to engage in inquiry. If steps are too broad, then students will flounder and become distracted.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Looking through the WISE library I came across a lesson called String Instruments which I decided to enhance by applying 3 of the main ideas from WISE. \u00a0These 3 ideas \u201dSupport Autonomous Learning\u201d, \u00a0\u201cPromote the Personal Relevance of Science and \u201cmaking ideas visible to students\u201d <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Slotta &amp; Linn. 2009), <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are key concepts when developing a WISE project. The goal of this WISE lesson is to teach students what sound is and ask them to create their own musical instrument, I decided to incorporate the digital music creation tool Sonic Pi. \u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sonic Pi is a sound programming environment developed specifically to <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/archives\/4906\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">teach programming concepts<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> where sound synthesis provides the medium for learning how to program, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0We would use it on our Raspberry Pi\u2019s alongside the \u201cRuler Model\u201d that the WISE lesson utilizes, to draw comparisons between the analog and digital nature of sound in our world. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Jim Slotta\u2019s WISE article states\u201d Simulations and interactive models are perhaps the most powerful form of scientific visualization, because they represent complex ideas and causal relationships in a temporal, \u201cplayable\u201d form.\u201d <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Slotta &amp; Linn. 2009). Amplitude, Frequency, Pitch and Duration are all explained through the use of a ruler attached to a desk. \u00a0I added a brief tutorial for those 4 lessons to show how the same principle can be applied in a digital setting through Sonic Pi. Rather than just using a ruler the students can fully manipulate and control their sounds waves in Sonic Pi. \u00a0Creative boundaries are expanded through the digital tools. As well the numerous branches that digital tools affords <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">supports autonomous learning by enabling students to carry out projects without having to constantly seek guidance from teachers or peers.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Linn, Clark &amp; Slotta (2003). \u00a0Few things are more personal than music. The lesson presents an element of creation in a physical sense through building a string instrument. Then adding a digital element will build on the process of the students sense of \u201cowning\u201d their learning, instilling a personal connection with the the lesson. \u00a0I would take this lesson even farther by perhaps getting them to combine the physical with the digital using a Makey Makey like my students are doing here\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenSourceLab20\/status\/879782267484160000\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenSourceLab20\/status\/879782267484160000<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">James D.
