{"id":3375,"date":"2017-08-08T19:24:55","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T02:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/?p=3375"},"modified":"2017-08-08T19:24:55","modified_gmt":"2017-08-09T02:24:55","slug":"linear-equations-anchored-in-the-man-in-motion-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2017\/2017\/08\/08\/linear-equations-anchored-in-the-man-in-motion-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Linear Equations anchored in the Man In Motion Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the four instructional frameworks we explored in module B, I chose to look at anchored instruction where students are required to generate sub-questions based on a broader question anchored in a real-world situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The school I teach at is named after Rick Hansen; a man who has raised many millions of dollars in the name of spinal cord research. \u00a0When referring to Rick Hansen, his Man In Motion tour often comes up as it was the worldwide launch of his attempt to create awareness around spinal cord injury. \u00a0My lesson will develop a driving question around Rick Hansen\u2019s Man In Motion Tour and the curriculum requirements around Cartesian coordinates and linear equations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Driving Question:<\/em> How can we explain Rick Hansen\u2019s Man In Motion Tour using math?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 1:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are given a chance to brainstorm what this question means to them. \u00a0There is no context to this problem other than the math we have already covered in the class thus far &#8211; linear equations have not been studied yet. \u00a0Once they have had a few minutes to brainstorm, they add their ideas to a shared Google Doc. \u00a0Students are aware of the requirements of online collaboration and the behavior and accountability that comes with that. \u00a0Discuss as a class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Introduce to students the route data that has been acquired from the Rick Hansen School program (in spreadsheet form) of daily mileage traveled, dates traveled and each city that Rick stayed overnight. \u00a0This brings a new dynamic to the problem as students are now given some context. \u00a0Ask students to revisit their contributions from the previous step and update their position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 3:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take students outside to the soccer field where \u2018treasure\u2019 has been previously placed throughout the field. \u00a0In pairs, have students brainstorm effective ways draw a map for their peer to reach this treasure. \u00a0The aim is to have students begin to work with the x\/y plane and Cartesian coordinates. \u00a0Guide students and ask probing questions as required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 4:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explore the concept of constant speed and how it can be illustrated by a linear equation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a class, explore the PhET simulation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/en\/simulation\/graphing-slope-intercept\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/en\/simulation\/graphing-slope-intercept<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And speak about how any point on that line (position) can be expressed with some value of x or y. \u00a0Allow students a chance to play around with the slope and y-intercept. \u00a0Provide a list of questions students need to answer to better familiarize themselves with the y=mx+b form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 5:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assign students a country (each country has about 10 stops) that Rick visited during his Man In Motion tour and task students with using linear equations to try and explain his position at any point during a given day. \u00a0They can assume that he was travelling for eight hours per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This should be enough information for them to find his average speed and come up with a linear equation for each day. \u00a0Students will find that some days were longer than others in regards to distance &#8211; ask them why they think this is the case? \u00a0They could look at elevation changes on certain days etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I would love feedback on potential pitfalls or areas of development you may see.<\/p>\n<p>Baljeet<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the four instructional frameworks we explored in module B, I chose to look at anchored instruction where students are required to generate sub-questions based on a broader question anchored in a real-world situation.
