My First Time

One of my earliest memories of interacting with a computer was the summer of 1991. My mother had arranged for  me to go to a summer camp that focused on science and technology. There was one game in particular, Oregon Trail, that I was so thrilled to play. I could hardly wait for the afternoon portion of the camp where they would allow us to play on the game on the computer. This was over 20 years ago and the memory is still vivid. Why has this event stuck with me after all these years? Was it the simplicity of the  game and the technology back then or was it that this was my first time playing on a computer?

  1. Hi Kamille, I’ve heard so many stories from people who have pleasantly vivid memories of their time with this game – my wife included. I’m interested in the questions you asked, although I obviously can’t answer them for you 🙂

I can ask you another few questions, though!
What do you remember most about the game?
Did you realize at the time that it was meant to be educational? If not, do you think having known it was/is educational would have deterred you?

  2. Hi Kamille!

Like Scott, I cannot explain to you why you remember this memory so vividly. For myself, I also have vivid memories of the first game I every played on the computer and my first experiences with a computer at school. I wonder if it is because technology has developed so rapidly, that we are holding onto the “simpler times”. Times when we only had one or two options for games when we had access to a computer.

  3. Maybe this will help some of you answer and respond to your questions as well. Just don’t get sucked in as long as I did.

One of my first games (as we had the original Apple) was a game with a motorcycle that was going over hills. It was the most simplistic game, but we played it for so many hours. I’ve spent more time than I am proud of trying to find that game again, but so far, can’t find the exact one. The upgraded version also provided many hours of entertainment, but clearly had FAR superior graphics. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leGlRL8MFc0)

I wonder if that game would hold the same charm for me today? A part of me thinks so, as so many games that are popular today mimic the same game format. But maybe the experience of it being one of the first games is hard to match.

  4. Hi Kamille!
I can imagine how valuable that unrestricted exploration time with technology and gaming was to ignite your passion and curiousity. It made we wonder how many opportunities we provide for youth to develop interests and passions?
    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi Kamille,

I think you’ve raised a very good question. I can totally relate to you on this experience as when I was growing up, we always played this video game on the computer and it has a certain place in my memory. I even asked my brother to find that game CD and install it on my computer again so I could play it again. Digital technology has made an impact on all our lives in a way or another. Hopefully in a positive way for all!
