Newcomer: Hello Everyone!

Hello everyone!

I am a little late to join you all but glad that I am a part of this course finally. I live in Surrey, BC and am a full-time masters student at UBC. I am doing my M.A. in math education and I am taking this course as an alternative to one of the math education courses I have to take. I have never taken a MET course before, this would be my first one.

I taught for a year at a high school in Surrey after getting my education degree. I am hoping to learn different strategies on how to incorporate technology into my classroom and understand pros/cons of technology in education by the end of this semester.

I am going to try to catch-up on the discussions and assignments that I missed as soon as I can, therefore, I will be posting replies to some of you fellow’s posts.

Looking forward to working with you all for the rest of the semester and learn from everyone!

Hello from West Vancouver

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the late post here;I had some issues login in.  I am very excited to begin another semester in the MET program with you all.  This is my 5th/6th MET course and I’m really excited to cross the halfway mark!  When not out galavanting in the mountains or ocean, I teach Calculus and PreCalculus 12 in the West Vancouver School District.  I wouldn’t say I am innately great at math but I have really loved all the challenges and rewards my pursuits in Mathematics and Physics have provided me.

I began my career teaching senior math and physics for Maple Leaf Schools, a BC offshore school in Wuhan, China, from 2009 to 2012.  Eager to sail across, up and down the Atlantic, I later taught a similar course load from 2012 to 2015 onboard Class Afloat for a couple years, essentially a high school program operating on a Norwegian tall ship from 1927.

Since moving back to my hometown of the North Shore of Vancouver in 2015, I taught grade 6/7 at multiple schools for two years before finally making my way back to high school for the 2017/18 school year.  All told, I have taught at 8 schools, across 5 continents, every grade between 5 and 12, and in class sizes ranging from 30 to 3.  The common thread I found within each professional experience was the growing and widespread use of innovative technology within education.  I have kindled my passion for finding better ways to incorporate technology into my classroom and I am forever eager to watch my role as educator evolve with greater adoption of such technology in the classroom.

Beyond my professional pursuits, I am an avid sea kayaker, trail runner, mountain biker and skier and stand-up paddleboarding.  Any related to self-propulsion is my jam.

I am truly looking forward to working and collaborating with you all this term!

Hey from Manitoba!

A late hello from Brandon, Manitoba!  It is not so cold here right now, so we are coming out from under our blankets to bask in the sunshine.

This is my 10th MET course!  I have been waiting for the day to come to be able to say that!  I have taken 500, 510, 511, 512, 530, 532, 540, 565A, & 565G.  I have enjoyed each course for its depth and creativity and am so grateful to have learned so much along the way.

I am currently a Continuous Improvement Coach at a K-8 school in Brandon.  My experience prior to that is in enrichment education and literacy support and grades 5 – 8.  I do a lot of work with Genius Hour and personalized learning.  In the last couple years, I have started exploring makerspaces and STEM and an excited to learn more.  I love exploring design thinking with kids.

Looking forward to exploring these topics throughout the course and learning with you!

Hello:)

Hi everyone,

My name is Sabrina. Sorry for the late post; I just got back from India (after a very delayed flight). This term I am taking my 3rd, 4th, and 5th MET courses. Last term I took ETEC 511 and 512, both of which were fantastic! I am an LST teacher in Surrey, British Columbia; I have been teaching for 5 years. I hope to learn more about STEM and how to integrate technology within this sphere. I love traveling and being outdoors (but not in cold weather). Im looking forward to learning with everyone this term.

Hi from Bangladesh

Hello everyone,

I teach abroad in international schools. I am currently in Dhaka in Bangladesh where I teach mathematics in secondary school at international school Dhaka. As an educator, I am witnessing substantial changes into education due to technology integration. I hope to learn lots of technology tricks that I can share and use to improve my teaching and learning strategies. I am thoroughly enjoying the MET’s journey. I am taking two courses this term, and fingers crossed I will handle the workload.

When I am not busy teaching, planning, and marking. I love travelling and venturing in green spaces.

I look forward to collaborating and working with you all.

Happy New Year!

Hi from Hamilton

Hi everyone!  My name is Dave Dykstra.  I am currently taking my 8th and 9th MET courses, so the end may soon be in sight.  I have enjoyed this program, and my teaching has grown greatly through this program, as well as my comfort and confidence in working with tech in the classroom.  I am a teacher at Guido de Bres Christian High in Hamilton, Ontario, where I have been teaching for the past 17 years.  I have been blessed to work part-time for the last number of years which allows me some time for this program but also for my family who wouldn’t see me otherwise.  I teach mainly Bio11 and 12 and grade 9 and 10 science.

Since I’ve started MET, I’ve been able to start a Robotics program at out school using the VEX robotics system.  It continues to grow and move forward from 4 students in-house to more than 20 and a competition team last year.  In my classes, I have also been incorporating much more student centered learning and technology.  For my biology classes, we’ve been using digital fora as well as creating course wikis and digital artifacts, which for the most part have gone very well.

I am happily married for 15 years with 3 wonderful children (13,11,7) and a dog.  We love to travel in the summer (Maritimes last year) and my interests include tennis, kayaking, and skiiing.  I look forward to working with you all, and am happy to see a few familiar names to work with again!

Hello from Jamaica

Hi everyone,

I am Kamille Brodber and I live in Kingston, Jamaica. I have been married for four years and we don’t have any children. I like being outdoors, especially on sunny days, and exploring the rural parts of Jamaica.

This is my seventh course in the programme and as a science teacher I am looking forward to learning  concepts and new approaches that I think will improve my teaching. Presently, I teach chemistry at the post-secondary level  to students who are studying to become secondary science teachers.

I look forward to interacting with you all and learning from you.

Greetings from Williams Lake, BC

Happy New Year Everyone!

First, apologies for the late post, but I was having difficulty logging in to the blog. I think I have it figured out now.

This is my 6th MET course (and I am also taking 510 as my 7th). I have taken 500, 511, 512, 540 and 565M so far. I am excited and nervous, but am looking forward to learning with everyone. I can’t wait to learn more about how to integrate technology into my math and science grade 7 classroom.

For the past 7 years, I was teaching a variety of primary grades in Vancouver, but this summer I made the move back home to Williams Lake and am teaching grade 7 at a middle school (definitely a learning curve). I have limited technology in my current classroom (we share a laptop cart between 10 grade 7 classes). I recently signed up to be part of our district technology committee so I am hoping that this will change in the coming months.

In my spare time, I love running, hiking, snowshoeing, and just exploring the outdoors. We have lots of beautiful areas to explore here so I’m looking forward to spring weather.

Hello from Sherwood Park, Alberta!

Hey Everyone,

My name is Caleb Poole and I am from Sherwood Park, Alberta. I currently teach grade 5  in nearby Fort Saskatchewan and am in my 5th year of teaching. I must say, I think grade 5 is really the sweet spot of elementary. Their world is starting to expand quickly and it’s not ‘all about me’ but they don’t have that end-of-grade-6 cocky going on yet.

This is my 9th MET course. I am also taking ETEC 590 at the same time and am very excited to graduate this semester. This is my first semester taking 2 courses, but I also won’t be coaching this term…which will be nice. Other courses I have taken (in order) are: 500, 522, 565M, 511, 512, 510, 520 and 540.

In this course, I am really hoping to gain some practical ways to better my Math/Science instruction through the use of technology. Currently I use mostly games and virtual manipulatives, but I know there is so much more that I could be doing. It’s my hope that this course has a fair bit of practical and isn’t solely theoretical/historical in its focus.

In my spare time, I am decently active. I enjoy playing basketball, volleyball and flag football. I also regularly get out on the snowboard or dirt bike when the season is right. I coach volleyball at school and lead a bit of an informal 3D printing club with interested students. I enjoy learning about all things tech related and often find myself up far too late reading different blogs.

I’m excited to work with and learn from all of you over the next few months!

Greetings from Thailand

Hello from sunny Thailand!

My name is Ryan and I am the Principal of the British Columbia International School of Bangkok.

I have completed five courses thus far, so I am looking forward to moving on to the back five. I was actually registered in this course and two others in the summer semester 2017 but had to pull out in April due to a heavy workload. I was a VP at the time, moving into a principal position, and had taken on some major projects in the summer on behalf of my school. Something eventually had to give and I ended up dropping the courses I had and taking the fall semester off. While I will certainly be busy in my professional life this semester I’m quite content with pulling it back to one course, realizing this isn’t a sprint to the finish. It will come and I’d rather not get any additional grey hairs in the process.

I picked this course specifically because I really want to learn ways to support STEM in my school and empower students through this. I have an actual computer science teacher with experience in the field and a teaching degree this year on staff. It has been great collaborating with him and the more I learn I feel the better I will be able to support him as the principal.

When I worked as a teacher in Qatar, I took up robotics as an after-school club and this turned into my kids competing in the national robotic olympiad, placing 4th overall. I’ve since been keenly interested in learning programming and being forward thinking in my school planning.

Looking forward to learning with everyone!

P.S Sorry for the late post. I was just added off of the waitlist today
