{"id":4594,"date":"2018-01-17T19:54:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T02:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/?p=4594"},"modified":"2018-01-17T19:54:24","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T02:54:24","slug":"video-cases-5-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/2018\/01\/17\/video-cases-5-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Video Cases 5 &amp; 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey everyone!\u00a0 Sorry this is a little late; I pinched a nerve in my neck that has made school\/laptop work a little difficult.\u00a0 I have enjoyed reading your posts and your questions for the interviews.\u00a0 It will be great to read the abstracts next week.\u00a0 The common threads I am finding amongst our challenges and successes are reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, I saw myself and my colleagues in these videos.\u00a0 Like the teacher in the video, I am a coach who works closely classroom teachers and their students.\u00a0 In these cases, I noted a few key values that my colleagues and I share:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collaboration &#8211; the importance of working as a team.<\/li>\n<li>Risk Taking &#8211; in the safety of the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Adaptability &#8211; on the part of teachers and students<\/li>\n<li>Challenging Ways of Thinking &amp; Being Open Minded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also heard common frustrations regarding time, teachers&#8217; skill set, and an overall lack of knowledge.\u00a0 What I didn&#8217;t hear was a lack of access to technology, as that is a widespread issue and source of contention for our context.\u00a0 I am curious, how do these schools manage the technology so that each classroom and child gets what they need?\u00a0 How much control do they have over the technology budget and what devices are purchased for them to use?<\/p>\n<p>The characteristics I observed and noted about student learning was overwhelmingly positive and reflective of the skills and values we want students to develop.\u00a0 I recognized many of the criteria we highlighted in our &#8220;Unpacking Assumptions&#8221; posts.\u00a0 These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students using background knowledge and applying the knowledge they acquire.<\/li>\n<li>Technology facilitates deeper, more authentic engagement.<\/li>\n<li>Activities and lessons are more hands on.<\/li>\n<li>Students have more control over and ownership in their learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Case 6, one student commented that he maybe didn\u2019t understand the content until he applied it using technology.\u00a0 It led me to wonder, how often does this happen?\u00a0 How often are students not given the opportunity to timely apply what they have learned and it negatively impacts their understanding?\u00a0 How many times do we as educators and a system assess surface level understanding, in many cases without even knowing we\u2019re doing it?<\/p>\n<p>I also wondered what kind of questions are being asked?\u00a0 Who is asking the questions?\u00a0 How are they arriving at these key, essential questions that are required to facilitate these learning experiences?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey everyone!\u00a0 Sorry this is a little late; I pinched a nerve in my neck that has made school\/laptop work a little difficult.\u00a0 I have enjoyed reading your posts and your questions for the interviews.\u00a0 It will be great to read the abstracts next week.\u00a0 The common threads I am finding amongst our challenges and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":31999,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1669386],"tags":[2102],"class_list":["post-4594","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-a-video-cases","tag-module-a"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4594","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/31999"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4594"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4594\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4596,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4594\/revisions\/4596"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4594"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4594"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4594"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
