{"id":4785,"date":"2018-01-29T12:56:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T19:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/?p=4785"},"modified":"2018-01-29T12:57:01","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T19:57:01","slug":"4785","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/2018\/01\/29\/4785\/","title":{"rendered":"Layers of Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my\u00a0favourite\u00a0quotes is from\u00a0John\u00a0Dewey in 1915.\u00a0 He said &#8220;If we teach today&#8217;s students as we taught yesterday&#8217;s, we rob them of tomorrow&#8221;.\u00a0 This idea has been true since the early 1900s and it continues to resonate in the design of learning experiences.\u00a0 When I think about designing learning experiences for all learners, what do I envision?\u00a0 I created a word cloud that helped me begin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4786\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/files\/2018\/01\/TELE-Wordle-300x194.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/files\/2018\/01\/TELE-Wordle-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/files\/2018\/01\/TELE-Wordle-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/files\/2018\/01\/TELE-Wordle-620x402.png 620w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/files\/2018\/01\/TELE-Wordle.png 812w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I believe that TELEs should foster learning and growth of new content and tools.\u00a0 Learners should be questioning, collaborating, evaluating, and building their skillset.\u00a0 It must be around a topic\/content that they value or believe is important so that they are actively engaged.\u00a0\u00a0Lee and Choi&#8217;s (2017) research on higher-order thinking in technology enhanced learning environments helped develop my thinking and understanding of what I truly value.\u00a0 One of their ideas adds another dimension to TELEs to strengthen the experience; Lee and Choi explain that\u00a0synthesizing\u00a0information to arrive at multiple solutions is a critical component of higher-order thinking\u00a0(Lee &amp; Choi, 2017, p. 144).\u00a0 \u00a0Technology-enhanced learning experiences should be layered with many opportunities that require learners to develop their skills and build knowledge in authentic contexts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lee, J., &amp; Choi, H.
