{"id":4930,"date":"2018-02-03T15:38:24","date_gmt":"2018-02-03T22:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/?p=4930"},"modified":"2018-02-03T15:38:24","modified_gmt":"2018-02-03T22:38:24","slug":"problem-solving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/2018\/02\/03\/problem-solving\/","title":{"rendered":"Problem Solving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The definition of technology provided by Roblyer (2012) resonated with me the most.\u00a0 Technology is defined as \u201cus- our tools, our <strong>methods<\/strong>, and our creative attempts to <strong>solve problems<\/strong> in our environment\u201d.\u00a0 It is the tools that we use to engage our students and enhance their learning experiences.\u00a0 Technology is more than just a computer, ipad or other digital tools; it is also a pencil, blocks and other tangible items that students use to solve a problem.\u00a0 At times, these methods and the necessary tool are obvious (a calculator for a math problem) and other times it requires the imagination of our students (creating a raft out of pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks and clay).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As educators, our role is to provide students with the tools and background knowledge necessary for them to utilize these tools.\u00a0 It is then the student\u2019s responsibility to take the tool, information and connect this with their learned experiences to solve a presented problem.\u00a0 This is accomplished through student-centered, project based, collaborative learning opportunities where students are engaged and passionate about the learning.
