{"id":5433,"date":"2018-03-06T08:06:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T15:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/?p=5433"},"modified":"2018-03-06T08:06:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T15:06:20","slug":"personalized-synthesis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/2018\/03\/06\/personalized-synthesis\/","title":{"rendered":"Personalized Synthesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I think about our learning over the course of this module, I remember more similarities than differences.\u00a0 I remember thinking about different routes to the same destination.\u00a0 With inquiry learning being the destination, anchored instruction, SKI,\u00a0LfU, and TGEM are the different routes that Google Maps can provide.\u00a0 Which one is the fastest route?\u00a0 Which one is most effective?\u00a0 Which one is most efficient?\u00a0 Is the route selection the same for everyone?\u00a0 Should it be the same?<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These four TELEs remind me of an ongoing debate we have in my PLC.\u00a0 As a Continuous Improvement Coach, I meet with other CICs on a regular basis.\u00a0\u00a0One\u00a0of the conversations we have that can divide the room revolves around foundational skills versus foundational knowledge.\u00a0 Can students be successful by focusing more on skill development than knowledge development?\u00a0 Or are there pockets of foundational knowledge that all students need in order to be successful?\u00a0 What balance can we and should be strike?\u00a0 Regardless of the topics we explored in TELEs each week, we picked up on some common key ideas among them.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Skills Developed Through All TELEs<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Independence<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Problem-solving<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Cooperation<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Collaboration<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Data Analysis<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Making Thinking Visible<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Reflection<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Curiosity<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Clarify Understanding<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Modifying Thinking<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span>The question I am left with is, is it enough that students develop these skills regardless of the content covered?\u00a0 More specifically, if students have these skills are they able to learn and work with any content?\u00a0\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span>Teachers are responsible for facilitating TELEs and making informed decisions based on the needs, learning styles, and interests of their students.\u00a0 As an\u00a0instructional\u00a0coach, I would like to say that I could make a recommendation about which TELE would be the best choice, etc.\u00a0 However, one of the most significant ideas throughout Module B is that content and context matter.\u00a0 We need to make decisions based on the content that is being taught\/delivered\/facilitated and who is receiving and learning the content.\u00a0 The TELEs are student centered and the expectation is that they are teacher facilitated.\u00a0 The actual students must be apart of the equation.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When I think about TGEM, I love the use of the words and steps \u2013 generate, evaluate, and modify.\u00a0 I think this is exactly what we want and expect students to be able to do;
