{"id":5746,"date":"2018-03-21T15:58:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/?p=5746"},"modified":"2018-03-21T15:58:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:58:36","slug":"factoring-t-gem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/stem2018\/2018\/03\/21\/factoring-t-gem\/","title":{"rendered":"Factoring T-GEM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most effective resources I explored this week was Calculation Nation via NCTM.\u00a0 One of the games that required the deepest understanding and most strategy was Factor Dazzle:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calculationnation.nctm.org\/Games\/Game.aspx?GameId=A0537FC6-3B08-4AFC-9AD6-0CC5E3BC9B86\">https:\/\/calculationnation.nctm.org\/Games\/Game.aspx?GameId=A0537FC6-3B08-4AFC-9AD6-0CC5E3BC9B86<\/a>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Factor Dazzle allows you to challenge yourself or another player to a game of identify factors.\u00a0 You earn points based on the numbers you choose and the factors you are able to identify.\u00a0 This reminded me of a common misconception that students had when we started working with prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples.\u00a0 That is, since all even numbers are composite, all odd numbers must be prime.\u00a0\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following lesson has been developed using T-GEM (Khan, 2007, 2010, 2012).\u00a0 While traditionally used in Science classrooms, Khan&#8217;s research has proven T-GEM to be effective at developing inquiry skills and conceptual understanding (Khan, 2012).\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Generate:<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Students complete a Think-Pair-Share about how they identify prime and composite numbers.\u00a0 Teachers will look for use of appropriate vocabulary.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Evaluate:<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Students will individually play this version of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calculationnation.nctm.org\/Games\/Game.aspx?GameId=A0537FC6-3B08-4AFC-9AD6-0CC5E3BC9B86\">Factor Dazzle<\/a>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>On\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/popplet.com\/app\/#\/4616696\">Popplet<\/a>, they will write some of the\u00a0strategies\u00a0they used for playing the game.\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>In another web of\u00a0Popplet, they will comment on their strategy for identifying prime and composite numbers.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Students view the following videos and practice links on their Khan Academy accounts.\u00a0 Results are emailed to the classroom teacher for formative assessment.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/math\/pre-algebra\/pre-algebra-factors-multiples\/pre-algebra-factors-mult\/v\/finding-factors-of-a-number\">Finding Factors<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/math\/pre-algebra\/pre-algebra-factors-multiples\/pre-algebra-factors-mult\/v\/finding-factors-and-multiples\">Finding Factors &amp; Multiples<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/math\/pre-algebra\/pre-algebra-factors-multiples\/pre-algebra-factors-mult\/e\/factor-pairs\">Practice Factor Pairs<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Modify:<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Students will then pair up to challenge each other to this version of the game:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/illuminations.nctm.org\/activity.aspx?id=4134\">https:\/\/illuminations.nctm.org\/activity.aspx?id=4134<\/a>\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>They will increase the difficulty of the game incrementally as appropriate.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Students submit a written response based on the change to their strategy of determining factors and multiples.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Khan, S.
