Because of my experiences growing up in three countries, I have always had an internationalist outlook and a deep desire to improve understanding between cultures.
In 2014 I created a video-series to provide English speakers with a small window into the Mandarin language. There is an abundance of resources on the web for people who are interested in actually learning Mandarin, but for those who are merely curious, I wanted to enable a basic appreciation of the language as something that is warm, intelligent, and alive.
From late 2017 to early 2018 I co-organized the Resident Fellows’ Speaker Series with my neighbour Simangele Mabena at my graduate residence, St. John’s College UBC. The goal of this series was to enable connections between people from otherwise disparate academic and social circles. Each event drew, on average, about 20 attendees.
I do a fair amount of interpretation and translation in my daily life.
