Task 12: Speculative Futures

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Describe or narrate a scenario about a beverage found a century into a future in which order is deliberately coordinated or imposed. Your description should address issues related to the brain and elicit feelings of alienation.  By 2124, anxiety and depression have reached alarming levels within the general population, becoming a major public health issue. To address this, sedative beverages are now widely used to help people manage their daily lives. These drinks, which include brain-altering pharmaceuticals like Ativan, have largely taken the place of traditional beverages. The most popular…read more

Task 9: Network Assignment

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Honestly, I found it challenging to answer the questions in this task.  So, I began by simply listing my observations:  The entire class:  I observed that none of the songs received unanimous agreement from all students. Both “Melancholy Blues” and “Johnny B. Goode” had the most connections, totaling 16 each. This could be because these songs are familiar to us as they represent well-known American music genres.  Interestingly, the Senegalese percussion track received a strong vote of 15, although the reason for this is uncertain. Reflecting on my own choice, I…read more

Task 8: Golden Record Curation

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Narrowing down the 27 tracks on the Golden Record to 10 was challenging yet enjoyable. Since I wasn’t familiar with much of the music, I didn’t have strong emotional ties to any particular piece. As such, my decisions were primarily based on criteria other than personal preference. My goal was to create a collection that represented music from around the world and include a wide variety of genres. Keeping in mind that we don’t know how aliens might perceive or interpret music (as discussed in the Taylor (2019) podcast) helped…read more

Task 7: Mode Bending

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

I found this task challenging. I spent a lot of time contemplating different approaches but didn’t connect with any of them. So, I decided to start simply and just review the objectives of the first task as a starting point for its redesign.  According to the New London Group (1996), redesigning isn’t about replicating existing designs or merely being creative; it’s about transforming the original (available) design – in this case, Task 1.   To me, our first task served two primary purposes:  It provided a method for introducing ourselves…read more

Task 6: An Emoji Story

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Every Friday at our house is pizza-and-movie-night, so the decision to choose this movie was straightforward since it was fresh in my mind from our weekly tradition. To be honest, I also considered how visually engaging it would be. Given that it’s a children’s show, I knew there would be plenty of fun emojis and characters (such as lots of animals, as you can see). The week before this movie, my husband and I watched Dune 2, and summarizing that in a recognizable way would have been almost impossible. So…read more

Task 5: Twine Task

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Oral Path Twine.html I began this task by experimenting with Twine to see how easy it was to use. I started with a silly little “choose your own adventure” story about meeting a grizzly bear on a hike and found Twine to be straightforward and user-friendly. As the day progressed, I started to consider whether I could use Twine for more than just storytelling; maybe I could use it for instructional purposes too.  I teach oral pathology to dental hygiene students and frequently use flowcharts to assist them in organizing material…read more

Task 4: Manual Scripts and Potato Printing

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

I really enjoyed the potato printing process, especially because I got to share it with my kids.  I had several 5 letter words in mind, but ultimately decided on “ocean” quite simply because I love the ocean. I grew up next to it and have always found its presence calming. The most challenging part for me was carving out the mirrored reflection of the letter. I made that mistake a few times, but I found it became easier with practice. I also found curved letters harder to carve then the…read more

Task 3: Voice to Text Task

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

My 5 Min Story Dave and I – 20 years later How does the text differentiate from the conventions of written English?  The most obvious difference to me between this text and conventional written English is the lack of paragraphs. Right off the bat, this text is intimidating to read because it’s essentially one solid page of words. The punctuation is either completely incorrect or missing, which I find to be significant because it makes the pace and flow of the story hard to gauge. The grammar is incomplete in…read more

Task 1: What’s In Your Bag?

Posted by in Weekly Tasks

Hi everyone.  My name is Stephanie Takeda and here is a picture of my workbag. This trusty companion is by my side throughout the workweek as I fulfill my roles as an instructor and program coordinator of the dental hygiene program at the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, BC. The items you see are pretty representative of what you might find in it at any given moment.  My workbag is essentially a massive black sack. It was chosen specifically for its utility (its wipeable!) and ability to hold “stuff”…read more
