Innovation- The Modern David And Goliath Story

Samsung’s products blew up the market yet again! But this time, not in a good way.

Reports of their washing machines exploding during use have begun to surface and are taking the internet by storm. The news could not have come at a worse time for Samsung, having recalled all models of their new flagship smartphone, Galaxy Note 7, earlier this month. Consumers had reported that the phones’ battery would explode or catch fire, not ideal for a product when it’s in your pocket for most of the day. It seems that the company will not escape the eyes of the media for a long time.

Both, Samsung and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued warning to consumers about the potential safety hazards of using these machines. To make matters worse, Samsung stated that the issue affected top-loaders manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016. However, reports suggest that is highly likely that only products sold in the US are to be used with caution.

Samsung now faces an uphill battle of rebuilding its brand. The market is already competitive as ever, and Samsung seems to have fallen short at the worst possible time. Consumers already seem to be looking for alternatives, as brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi are taking Asia by storm. Meanwhile, Apple may have lost a few loyal users with their latest innovation- the removal of the headphone jack in their latest model, the iPhone7.

Consumers have been craving for a new innovator to rise on the global market. Even though most people are aware of the fact that iPhones are simply annual iterations, they still end up making the purchase due to lack of a better alternative.

This year, OnePlus made a statement with its new flagship the OnePlus3. The company’s innovation eclipses that of other giants of the industry, but it lacks the sales figures that these giants pride themselves with. The Chinese company had a major increase in sales all throughout Asia, showcasing the possibilities of technology, providing it at half the price of the new iPhone and Note7. Unfortunately, they are close to being unheard of on the global front and continue to live on in the shadows of the bigger brands.

It seems however that brands such as OnePlus, which care more about quality as opposed to the bigger names, will rule the roost in the future. In a time where consumers demand more and more out of their technology each day, it seems only logical that a company like OnePlus, one which innovates on the basis of customer feedback, will flourish in the future. A future where the iPhone and Samsung may be a name that is alien to a few.
