After reading my classmate, Evan Wong’s blog post on the Vancouver Canucks’ latest season, I was intrigued to dive deeper into the topic. Evan talks about how there was a lack of communication between the fans and the management. The fans believed that the team needed a complete re-build before the start of the season, whilst the management had other ideas.

Evan explains how the Canucks went off to a flying start. This was, however, short-lived, with key players getting injured, the team soon crashed and burned. The management however still resisted the urge to buy new players to add to their fire.

Now mathematically out of the playoffs, the Canucks have traded two veterans for young blood. Though this has hushed the fans, for now, many players are experiencing a lack of extrinsic motivation as they are no longer competing in any major tournaments. In the coming days, the Canucks have seen a high turnover rate, causing the coach to field rookie debutants during NHL games. The fans were obviously not pleased with these tactics.

Now 27th in the league, the Canucks can only hope for a high draft pick. Evan suggested that the current coaching staff be sacked, in addition to trading players past their prime for new potential.

After analysing the situation, I would agree with Evans’ suggestion. The appointment of a new coaching staff will be a breath of fresh air for the players already on the team. It will give each player something to fight for, i.e. a spot on the team. Additionally, the new signings will hopefully give the fans something to cheer about.
