During the first class of COMM101, I was surprised by the teaching method since it allowed students to show themselves up and express their opinions and thoughts bravely. What’s more, this unique teaching style let students to think deeply and rationally when they face a problem. The main content in the first class was about government intervention on products and what opportunities and threats would be brought to the producers under the intervention. Besides the given example (soft/energy drinks), teachers also let us to do discussion about another product that should be intervened by government. This discussion not only helped me deepen the understanding of the class content, but also gave me a chance to talk with different people. The last but not the least, in next classes, I believe the discussions on COMM101 class will help me practice my weak spoken English and support me to become a more outgoing person.

  • Article: Why Canada should welcome more Syrian refugees—a lot more

  • The following contents are my opinions towards this article:

In my opinion, this article gives a partial statement and simplifies the refugee problems. I partially agree with the idea that a large number of refugees can make a contribution to Canadian society and sustain the declining economy caused by aging population. However, there are many negative sides brought by those refugees that cannot be ignored. On the one hand, from the economic aspect, those refugees do increase the burden of Canadian government before they make contribution to the country. Because of the large number of settlements, more houses need to be constructed to meet the demand of refugees. Besides housing problem, those refugees also need huge amount of supply of water, food and other materials to make a living and therefore, huge number of rubbish is produced. Canadian government has to spend more money not only on the basic construction but also on the environment protection. On the other hand, from the social aspect, different ethnicity will definitely bring a big problem. Traditional animosities may exist between groups. Even if it is not the case, failures in communication and understanding caused by language or culture can form a barrier. In this case, conflict between refugees and local people is inevitable. That will cause social instability. Thus, both benefits and shortages brought by the refugees need to be considered.

comments: This article simply writes that Canadian government should offer homes to Syrian refugees with sympathy. However, this article is one-side and there are many problems related to refugees should be considered.
