More than 20 people including Curriculum and Pedagogy Department Head Dr. Peter Grimmet, faculty members from the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy Dr. Cynthia Nicol, Dr. Marina Milner-Bolotin, and the Department of Science Prof. Jim Carolan, Dr. Gulnir Birol and Prof. Valery Milner, and graduate students from both departments enjoyed the enlightening presentation.

The PowerPoint presentation on James Bond, Internet Memes and Partying Penguins (or what happens when you let students devise their own assessments) by Dr. Simon P. Bates, Senior Advisor, Teaching and Learning Academic Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning Director, Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISoTL) Professor of Teaching, Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Dr. Bates introduced social learning tool ‘PeerWise‘ and described its main features that could be utilized to enhance student participation and engagement. It is interesting to know that Dr. Bates and his colleagues have recently used PeerWise at UBC in first year undergraduate Physics classes and the students have shown great enthusiasm towards learning Physics by participating in peer/self-created multiple choice assessments using PeerWise.

During the discussion following presentation, Dr. Bates shared an article about the use of multiple choice questions:

Little, J., Bjork, E., Bjork, R. & Angello, G. In such assessments, students are required to write their own multiple choice items, together with answering and discussing those of their peers, using a freely-available online system. He presented data from a number of introductory level university courses that shows clear evidence of high quality question authoring, student engagement, peer interactions and learning all taking place outside the classroom, together with some startlingly original contexts for questions.

Bio data: Dr. Simon P. Bates joined UBC in the summer of 2012, and was previously Dean of Learning and Teaching and Professor of Physics Education at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He has published extensively in the areas of physics education research and the role of technology in enhancing learning. While at Edinburgh, he established and led the Physics Education Research Group (EdPER), which quickly became an internationally visible group of researchers, securing research grant funding from various external sources, including the UK Higher Education Academy, the Institute of Physics (IoP) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). He teaches on the Physics 101 course at UBC. More details about Dr. Simon P.
