{"id":35,"date":"2017-05-10T15:11:16","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T22:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/syntaxofinteraction\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2017-05-10T15:11:16","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T22:11:16","slug":"lecture-4","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/syntaxofinteraction\/lecture-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecture 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lecture we\u00a0have a closer look at confirmationals (there is so much to cover)<\/p>\n<p>Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/syntaxofinteraction\/files\/2017\/05\/basque-day-4.compressed.pdf\">slides<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a few topics we are covering<\/p>\n<p>i) <strong>Confirmationals in Atayal.\u00a0<\/strong>We will look more closely at another East Asian language: Atayal which (like Chinese) illustrates a system that exploits the full range of expected confirmationals.<\/p>\n<p>ii)\u00a0<strong>The mechanism of valuation.\u00a0<\/strong>We&#8217;ll explore how exactly valuation happens: I argue that we don&#8217;t need features, but that instead either the meaning or the sound can serve to value [<em>u<\/em>coin]. This will also lead us to investigate a little more closely how intonation is integrated into syntactic structure. You will then have an opportunity to check out if and how intonation plays a role in your language<\/p>\n<p>iii)\u00a0<strong>More parameters of variation.\u00a0<\/strong>Finally, we will explore more languages (Medumba and Northern Mandarin) and we&#8217;ll see that there are more parameters of variation associated with confirmationals.
