The health of the parrots is an important component of welfare for the birds.
In parrots, there are viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases that can interfere with the health and well being of parrots .Viral diseases cause the highest mortality rate in parrots. Parrots that are ill have the symptoms of weight loss, diarrhea, nasal discharge, poor feather condition, lethargy, conjunctivitis and anorexia ( Engebretson, 2006).
In order to prevent pet parrots from becoming diseased, it is important for the parrots to have access to food and water. It is also vital for the owner to understand the nutritional requirements of the species of parrot. The common diet found in pet stores for parrots are seed mixes. However, solely feeding parrots on seed mixes may result in malnutrition due to the lack of nutrients in the diet. It is recommended to also feed parrots a diet of pellets along with fruits and vegetables to ensure that the birds have a healthy diet. Therefore, the owner must research about a parrot’s diet before owning a parrot ( Engebretson, 2006).
