Classroom Climate

Developing positive relationships with students is an important part of developing a supportive classroom climate. Spending one day a week with the students prior to the practicum allowed me to get to know some of the students. However, during the practicum I got a better sense of their abilities, passions and interests. I would make sure to take time to get to know each student during the week and to truly listen to their stories, interests and concerns. I touched based with students who I knew needed more attention or was struggling and made sure to communicate that I cared. Throughout my practicum, I realized the importance of good communication and especially the effectiveness of praise. Initially, I made clear what behavior was unacceptable but I wasn’t reinforcing students for their good behavior. Since then, I am dedicated to giving out positive feedback and praise. Students need to know when they are doing well and praising them for good behavior increases the chances students will continue exhibit good behavior.
