Each piece reflects a different way of communicating identity through sound\u2014from the meditative serenity of Kuan P\u2019ing-hu\u2019s <em data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"672\">\u201cFlowing Streams\u201d<\/em> to the soulful lament of Blind Willie Johnson\u2019s <em data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"744\">\u201cDark Was the Night.\u201d<\/em> My choices intentionally balance <strong data-start=\"778\" data-end=\"804\">Western art traditions<\/strong> (Beethoven, Armstrong) with <strong data-start=\"833\" data-end=\"866\">non-Western musical heritages<\/strong> (China, India, Japan, Java, and Peru), reflecting an understanding of multiliteracies as outlined by the New London Group (1996), where meaning is shaped through diverse cultural modes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1056\" data-end=\"1805\">These tracks embody the idea that music is a <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1130\">universal semiotic system<\/strong>, carrying stories, emotions, and ideologies that transcend language. For instance, <em data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1231\">\u201cJaat Kahan Ho\u201d<\/em> conveys spiritual devotion through improvisational structure, while <em data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1327\">\u201cIzlel je Delyo Hagdutin\u201d<\/em> captures the strength of national and personal identity through the human voice. Collectively, these selections highlight how sound technologies preserve lived experiences and challenge cultural hierarchies in global communication.
