Canadian Symbols

-To assess their prior knowledge on symbols we did a think-pair-share where each pair had a symbol to guess. By the end of the lesson we could proudly put all the symbols in the ‘know’ section of our symbols board.

-We looked at the symbols on Canadian coins

-We explored one symbol in particular in great detail –the beaver! Throughout the week we read beaver books and collected our favourite beaver facts. By the end of the week student’s created beaver crafts that they put their favourite beaver facts onto

One of the students made a beaver dam during centers!

-We also continued our Canadian Symbols Unit. I read some beautiful Canadian book’s by Per-Henrik Gurth to the students because the pictures contained a lot of Canadian symbols we have been discussing. I knew I wanted to do an activity around the song Canada in my Pocket by Michael Mitchell and when I did some searching online I found an adorable power point created by a grade 2/3 class – if you love the song as much as I do be sure to check out the power point they made (schools.cbe.ab.ca/b207/pps/CanadaInMyPocket.pps‎). The students really loved the song & power point and by the second time some of the students were singing along to the chorus.
