A self-assessment blog post is my final assignment for this course, however — so here I go!

When I began English 301, I was also starting a communications consultancy with a focus on copywriting and voice-over performance. Over the summer, I have come to a place of strongly desiring to make social video my main source of income instead. This is less of a shift than it sounds like, as my communications consultancy was focussed on services for video production companies. Also, thankfully, I already have a fair bit of videography experience under my belt, and I’m currently subcontracting under a company that wants to see me continue in that direction. I intend to further my skill set in video by self-training through my work with The Film Factory and through the final, self-directed artistic project that will conclude my Bachelor of Fine Arts at UBC Okanagan. Currently, I am a capable videographer, but I’m always learning on the go. Because of this, I feel I can only make videos for clients who are aware of the learning curve I am on and who are supporting my journey. Maybe this is simply me being particular, but I believe in giving myself the time and space to produce quality work; and while I can currently do this in video, I can only do it if I have that time and space.

It is because I intend to make major strides in my video production skills this fall that I am not yet creating my professional web presence. I was a dedicated student throughout English 301, and I took many assignments (for example, the formal report) beyond the realm of a learning exercise; but I feel that if I developed a public web page around what I have to offer at this moment, it wouldn’t accurately represent the direction in which I want to move. And I don’t want to put myself out there as less than professional.

I do, however, have a great many other employable skills. Some of these are:

– text-based content creation (creative writing)
– advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
– writing reports
– researching, including conducting interviews
– social media management
– small business management
– bookkeeping
– public speaking
– broadcast presentation/on-camera performance
– illustration

I’m excited to put these skills to work as a creative content creator for clients in whose visions I believe. In addition, I am confident that the skills I developed in English 301 will contribute to the journey of my career.

I must admit, I find it challenging to self-assess in a textual form for a public audience.
