Unlike your friends in science classes, who have full use of their department\u2019s laboratory amenities, you are responsible for purchasing and bringing the supplies necessary for your education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do you start? Find a well-respected art store that stocks a wide range of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovegroundartsupplies.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplies for students and professional artists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Chat with the sales staff (many of them artists themselves) about recommendations. Consult your orientation package and class CVs. And use the following list as a rough buying guide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing Essentials<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing is a foundational skill in art class. Not only is it a popular medium for finished works, but artists working in other media often use drawing for ideation, planning, and preparatory underdrawing. Some drawing essentials include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sketchbooks of various sizes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphite pencils of varying hardness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kneaded and vinyl erasers and a pencil sharpener<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vine, compressed and pencil charcoal products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the risk of sounding like a broken record, consult your course requirement documents to determine whether the teacher requires specific drawing tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painting Supplies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to the wide world of painting. Most likely, your courses will require different types of paint (this is especially true of first-year classes, which tend to survey multiple painting styles). Brands to look for include Gamblin, Flashe, Liquitex, and Winsor &amp; Newton. You will also need tools. Here\u2019s a short list of what you might need:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil, vinyl and watercolour paint sets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canvas boards, stretched canvas, and\/or canvas pads<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several different brush types<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A palette and a palette knife.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re uncertain whether to elect for artist-grade or student-grade supplies (once again!), consult the course requirement documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixed Media Tools, Sculpting and 3D Art Basics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/art-terms\/m\/mixed-media\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixed media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines various materials into a single artwork \u2013 including conventional <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unconventional materials. Don\u2019t worry about the unconventional stuff for now; instead, stock things like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adhesives and glues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pastels\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pens and markers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for your sculpting and 3D work, you will likely need essentials like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clay (either air-dry or modelling clay) and wax\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aluminum wire to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h6m3pUeebPg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create structural armatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loop tools, modelling tools and other sculpting tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can wait to purchase these as your courses progress. Mixed media and sculpting tend to come later in the term. (Sigh, once more, you should check your course documents to be sure!)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizational Systems\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but certainly not least, you need an easy way to tote these supplies from classroom to classroom. Consider investing in organizational systems like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A portfolio case<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A toolbox\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presentation binders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And drafting storage tubes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, your shopping spree should come to a close \u2013 for now.
