What is cosmetic testing on animals?
Cosmetic testing on animals is a type of examination using animals in order to identify the safety of ingredients and hypoallergenic properties of cosmetic products designed for human use. Chemicals are often rubbed onto a patch of the animal’s shaved skin, dripped into their eyes, or fed to them.
How are cosmetics defined?
The Government of Canada defines cosmetics “any substance used to clean, improve or change the complexion, skin, hair, nails or teeth. Cosmetics include beauty preparations (make-up, perfume, skin cream, nail polish) and grooming aids (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, deodorant)”.
Why are animals used?
Many companies use animals to test cosmetic products in order to:
